A hillside old town built around a blue-domed church, and an artist colony since the 1960s that never really left.
Altea is a hillside old town of around 23,000 people, built around the Church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo — its blue-and-white ceramic domes, nicknamed the “Dome of the Mediterranean,” are visible from almost anywhere in town. Since the 1960s it’s been a genuine artist colony, not a marketing label, with a Fine Arts university campus and a concert hall (Palau Altea) that’s hosted world-class performers. The old town’s steep, narrow streets are largely car-free — park a few blocks away and walk in.
Altea’s old town climbs a hillside in a maze of whitewashed, flower-draped streets, all leading toward the Plaza de la Iglesia and the Church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo — rebuilt in its current Neo-Baroque form in 1910, its blue-and-white tiled domes have become the single most photographed sight on this stretch of coast. Come by car and you’ll need to park several streets away; the centre itself is built for walking, not driving.
The artist-colony reputation dates back to the 1960s, when painters, writers, and musicians began settling here, and it’s stuck: Altea holds an official designation as cultural capital of the Valencian Community, hosts a campus of Miguel Hernández University’s Fine Arts faculty, and its concert hall, the Palau Altea, has staged performers of the calibre of Montserrat Caballé and Mstislav Rostropovich. Altea is also a founding member of the Douzelage, a town-twinning network linking 24 towns across the EU — an unusually international footnote for a town this size.

Warm enough to swim, and the old town’s steep streets are far more comfortable to explore before peak summer heat.
Average highs around 26°C, reaching 30°C — beautiful but busy, with the old town at its most crowded.
Sea stays warm, crowds thin out, and it’s arguably the best month to actually enjoy the old town on foot.
