Dénia is a working port town crowned by an 11th-century Moorish castle, and one of only a handful of UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy in the world — famous above all for its gamba roja, the red prawn served at portside restaurants across town. Its 20km of coastline splits cleanly in two: Les Marines, long golden sand running north, and Las Rotas, rocky coves and a marine reserve to the south. From the port, Baleària ferries run to Ibiza in about 2.5 hours. It’s roughly 83km from both Alicante and Valencia airports — genuinely the Costa Blanca’s border town.
Dénia’s castle dates to the 11th century, shaped in turn by Roman, Moorish, and Christian rule, and now houses an archaeological museum inside its walls — worth the climb for the views over the town and the sea alone. Below it, the old town’s narrow streets mix tapas bars and ceramic-fronted buildings, opening onto the working port where fishing boats and yachts share the same water.
Dénia earned its UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy title in 2015, and the reputation is real: the gamba roja, Dénia’s red prawn, is considered among the best in Spain, served simply at restaurants along the harbour. The coastline either side of town couldn’t be more different — Les Marines to the north is long, sandy, and family-friendly, while Las Rotas to the south is a rocky, protected marine reserve with clear water for snorkelling, including the Cova Tallada sea cave beneath Montgó, the mountain that shelters the town and gives its natural park a summit of 753m.
Warm enough to swim at both Les Marines and Las Rotas, with the castle and Montgó trails still comfortable to explore.

Sea stays warm, crowds thin fast, and gamba roja season runs through autumn regardless.
