Moraira is a small, upmarket town of around 10,000 permanent residents — part of the Teulada-Moraira municipality — with 8km of coastline and strict planning laws that have kept it free of high-rises entirely. Its two historic landmarks, the 1742 Castillo de Moraira and the 16th-century Cap d’Or watchtower, were both built to warn against Barbary pirate raids. Today it’s known for El Portet Bay, a working fish market, and a marina with 620 berths — understated by design, not by accident.
Moraira’s low-key feel isn’t an accident — Teulada council’s planning laws restrict building height and protect the area’s pine trees, which is why this stretch of coast never grew the high-rises that define towns just a few kilometres away. Its two historic landmarks tell the same defensive story: the Castillo de Moraira, completed in 1742 and armed with four bronze cannons, sits right in the centre of town beside L’Ampolla beach, while the Cap d’Or watchtower — 16th-century, 11 metres tall, built without a doorway as a defensive feature — stands on the headland above, part of a coastal warning chain against Barbary pirate raids ordered by Felipe II.
The fishing village roots are still visible too: Moraira’s fish market remains one of the most popular on the Costa Blanca, and a handful of working boats still operate out of the harbour alongside the 620-berth marina. Inland, the surrounding hills grow Muscatel grapes for the local wine trade — a detail that rarely makes it into typical resort write-ups.
Warm enough to swim at El Portet, with the Cap d’Or hike still comfortable before summer heat.
Peak season — the population swells several times over. Book well ahead for anything.
Sea stays warm, crowds ease off fast, and the fish market and marina are far more pleasant to explore.
