Calpe is dominated by the Peñón de Ifach, a 332-metre limestone rock that’s been a protected Natural Park since 1987, with two beaches — Playa de la Fossa and Arenal-Bol — curving either side of it. It’s also home to La Muralla Roja, Ricardo Bofill’s labyrinthine 1973 apartment building that’s become one of the most photographed pieces of architecture in Spain, and Baños de la Reina, the excavated remains of a Roman fish-salting factory right by the sea. It’s about 63km, roughly 50 minutes, from Alicante airport.
The Peñón de Ifach is impossible to miss — a limestone rock rising 332 metres straight out of the sea, joined to the mainland by centuries of fallen sediment, and a protected Natural Park since 1987. A marked trail leads to the summit past old watchtowers and Iberian-era remains; on a clear day, the view stretches as far as Ibiza. At its foot, Playa de la Fossa and Arenal-Bol curve away on either side — two of the most photographed beaches in Spain.
Calpe’s other icon couldn’t be more different: La Muralla Roja, architect Ricardo Bofill’s 1973 apartment complex, a maze of interlocking towers, bridges, and staircases in red, pink, and blue, inspired by North African kasbah architecture. It’s since become one of the most Instagrammed buildings in Spain. History runs deeper still at Baños de la Reina, the excavated remains of a Roman fish-salting factory and villa, right on the seafront between the town and the rock.
Warm enough to swim, and cool enough that the Peñón hike is genuinely comfortable rather than a summer slog.
Peak season — both beaches and the Peñón trail are at their busiest. Start the hike early to beat the heat.
Sea stays warm, crowds thin out, and it’s arguably the best window for the hike and Las Salinas both.
